  We have been regular customers of this pub with our group of friends, but after tonight’s experience it will be the last time we set foot here. We ordered a smash burger, a club sandwich and three IPA beers. The food arrived after a very long wait and, in the case of the smash burger, completely cold. I chose not to complain out of respect for the staff and considering how busy the place was. The real issue emerged when it was time to pay the bill: we were charged a total of CHF 43.50 for three IPA beers, i.e. CHF 14.50 per beer. This price was significantly higher than both the other beers on the menu and the average price of a 0.5L draft beer in Zurich (around CHF 8, typically between CHF 6.5 and CHF 9, according to public cost-of-living data, numbeo.com). When I ordered, I had simply asked for IPAs; since they were not available, I was offered a “Rainbow IPA” without any indication of the price. The prices were displayed only on a screen behind the bar, which was not readable from the table where we were seated. I did not ask for any refund, having already paid. I merely made a constructive remark: when a customer asks for a product that is not available and is offered a significantly more expensive alternative, it would be fair to communicate the price before taking the order. The response I received, accompanied by an ironic and unprofessional attitude, left me genuinely perplexed. The point is not the price itself, which may be legitimate for various reasons, but transparency, service quality and respect for the customer. A cold burger, incomplete information about prices and a dismissive attitude are not acceptable, especially in a venue that positions itself in this price range. Zurich offers many better alternatives where customers are treated with greater professionalism. As far as we are concerned, Ale House is definitely off the list.
